Mary E. Williams was born in Augusta, Kentucky, on November 30, 1909. She attended Randolph-Macon Women's College from 1928 to 1930, and received the A.B. degree from Radcliffe College in 1933. She earned an M.A. in Mathematics from the University of Kentucky in 1936, taught mathematics at Ashland, Ky. Senior High School (1936-1941), and at Marshall College (1942-1946), and became Chair of the Skidmore College Mathematics Department in 1946. Skidmore College became a four-year liberal arts college in 1922 and in the same year began to offer its students a baccalaureate degree in nursing in cooperation with Mary McClellan Hospital. In 1942 the Department of Nursing moved to New York City, which offered students a greater diversity of healthcare organizations and hospitals for their clinical studies.
